Child Friendly Restaurants to visit in Johannesburg


Long and sunny days are upon us and we will now be going out with our little ones. But you have to admit, not a lot of restaurants are child friendly enough – apart from the usual high chair and indoor playing area and limited kid’s menu that most offer, there’s really not much for the inquisitive, fidgety and playful toddlers.

We’ve compiled a list of restaurants around Johannesburg that your whole family will love and enjoy.

Trés Jolie 

Jolie is a country restaurant and venue in Ruimsig, characterised by exquisite gardens and landscaped with fountains and water features. This picturesque restaurant also boasts a farmyard where children can feed animals, enjoy a pony ride and play, all within eyes view of their parents. Other weekend activities for the kids include; sand art, face painting and swing rides on a funfair.

There are many reasons why kids love visiting Trés Jolie. Parents who want to enjoy some time out from a difficult week of running around can enjoy a delicious meal while the kiddies are playing and entertained by all the fun activities this restaurant has to offer.


A stone throw away from Cedar Square in Fourways lies this gem called Picolinos. A rustic family restaurant that serves Italian cuisine.With a distinct African décor theme Picolinos Pizz-A-Ria Fourways mainly comprises of outdoor thatched lapas which can seat up to 300 people, also perfect for kiddies parties. There is also a duck pond and farmyard as well as a large kiddies play area.


Papachinos has a couple of branches around Gauteng and you can pretty much choose whichever one to visit. They have a wide variety of good quality and wholesome meals to choose from and the kids will be entertained for hours playing, whilst supervised by their friendly staff. The desire for a child friendly “family restaurant” with caring supervision that provided quality and wholesome meals together with state of the art playground and restaurant facilities was the inspiration for the concept and yielded the establishment of their first store. A heads up; you have to try their nachos, an absolute fave!


A proudly South African gem! From art and music to cuisine and crafts, everything at Moyo is African-themed. Enjoy some truly South African meals, traditional dancing and attire and African face-painting to get you into the spirit. Kids can play and be creative in the art space provided, learn African dances, listen to stories and play traditional games while parents enjoy the atmosphere.


Bambanani in Melville is a parent and child haven! Without even going into their scrumptious meals, let’s talk about their kid wonderland that is their restaurant. They cater for children from 6 months to 12 years old in their entertainment facilities; a state-of-the-art four storey covered jungle gym, dress-up area and sand art, a media room complete with Playstation, Wii, Xbox and a continuous reel of kids’ movies being screened. Their library is fully stocked with loads of wonderful, interactive books for children of all ages.

And if thats not enough, they have excellent and qualified child minders looking after your kids so you can relax with your glass of wine knowing that they’re safe.

A Churrasqueira

A Churrasqueira is an authentic Portuguese restaurant in the south. They’re fully equipped with a kid’s play area, complete with a jungle gym and race track! They also serve Magnum milkshakes, which are to die for.

Happily Ever Laughter

And if you’re in the East Rand be sure to check out Happily ever Laughter located in the heart of Bedfordview. If you’re sophisticated mom who’s into boutique restaurants then this is for you because they cater for kids too! Their menu ranges from breakfasts, wraps, sandwiches, steaks and sushi!
